US film company acquires Farhadi Cannes opener

US picture company Focus Features has acquired the international rights of Asghar Farhadi’s new offering 'Everybody Knows'.

The film company will distribute in a number of countries such as the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, India and parts of Asia.

While Focus Features won the bid for Cannes opener ‘Everybody Knows’, it did not go to American entertainment company Netflix.

Opening night competition entry ‘Everybody Knows’ features famed actor and celebrity couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz.

Farhadi has two foreign-language Oscar wins, for ‘A Separation’ and ‘The Salesman’.

“Asghar is a world-class filmmaker whose work transcends language,” Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, praising the Iranian director.

Focus Features kicked off the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival currently being held from 8 to 19 May 2018.
